I am never really sure how many parallels there are between this world and my own, particularly in terms of holidays-even when it makes very little sense for them to be there for apparent historical reasons. With even recent news broadcasts by the natives dropping hints that Valentine's Day-or something like it-is around the corner, I'm finding myself rather curious about what sort of holidays naturally exist in this world.

I suppose that whatever the natives are celebrating could be some sort of equivalent that came about naturally... or it could be something that they picked up on from people from other worlds and decided to exploit in a fairly typical fashion. After all, why would the companies of this world miss out on an opportunity to use relationship-based guilt in their marketing strategies at some point in the year?

My general displeasure with the overcommercialization of this holiday aside, it is regrettably very effective in getting people to want copious amounts of sweets, but if I'm going to have anything like that this season it's going to be made by my own hands. Has anyone attempted the recipe that was brought up in Friday's news broadcast and found it to be less than satisfactory? If not... well, it should be obvious that I'm considering trying to make them.

Do I really need a reason to be dissatisfied with the state of modern society? The fact that all the culture has been stripped out of these particular holidays is really just a symptom of the problems with society as a whole.

What culture is that, exactly? It's not like Alternia has a varied culture or anything. Fuck, half of these holidays don't have an equivalent.

It's various cultures on Earth, really. The majority of them have been gutted of any indigenous flavor and respect for their own history for some sort of universalized consumerist trash. It's by no means universal, of course, but it's a distressing trend.

What equivalents exist for Alternia, anyway? I know there's no real equivalent for the holiday that's currently on everyone's minds-or, at least, that's the impression I got.

We have a "romantic" holiday, you know. For a culture that thrives on multiple concupiscent partners and it being essential to have them before the Imperial Drones start collecting, no shit it'd exist. Ours is different, obviously, as Quadrant Appreciation is more about all of the quadrants, not just the reddest one.

Instead of Christmas, there is something similar called Twelfth Perigee's Eve.

It was with Miss Megido, on her post yesterday. I replied to it in order to give her some historical background on Valentine's day. She didn't mention an equivalent, so I assumed there wasn't one-a bit too hastily, it seems.

It's the same in objective only. Honest? There's not much celebration as humans think of it. More like "oh it's this day" and we move on. Nothing special to it.

That sounds far less annoying than it could be, really. Something low-key like that is vastly preferable to... well, this.

As do I. It's far less bothersome in the long run, and I can't possibly understand why anyone would want to parade these sorts of things about.

It's funny... Most people here don't really understand the whole concept of sarcasm.

That honestly doesn't surprise me much, given how many people I've met prior to coming here who were incapable of understanding it. I would expect at least some people to get it, though, particularly if they weren't natives.
