I must say, that was far less difficult than I expected it to be. Are all of the Gym Leaders so easily defeated? I will be sorely disappointed if I'm not forced to actually employ strategic thinking at least once.

I've heard that they have several odd properties, which lead me to wonder if there was anything about their design that would warrant that.
