That is true, but there's a rather obvious difference between legends of old and cartoons about mice.

Because there's documented evidence of who created the latter story and the creative process behind it. Legends, of course, go so far back in history that there's no evidence as to whether it's just a story or not.

Doesn't mean that a created story can't take on a life of its own. Like, I heard, once, about this lady who lives under the sea, and when she writes stories, they come to life.
